On October 9, 2021, in Warsaw, Poland, Angelika Jarosławska Sapieha received a special award from Super Wiktoria for her humanitarian work and contribution to the global demining action like Princess Diana.

She was distinguished as an “International Peace Ambassador and Leader in the global anti-landmine campaign”. During the gala, which was attended by the representatives of the government, Princess Angelika had a touching speech about the global landmine situation.

More than 60 million people across the globe, tomorrow will wake up in the fear of being killed or maimed by landmines.

Princess Angelika Jarosławska Sapieha is continuing the anti-landmine campaign and support the action of demining the world, which was supported by Princess Diana. Princess Diana became the voice of those, who were wounded and physically hurt by landmines.
Now, 24 years later after Princess Diana’s sudden death, landmines are still hurting and killing children around the world.

[Angelika Jarosławska Sapieha’s speech [translation from Polish]:

“Thank you so much for this important and special award. I express my thanks to the high chapter.

I would like to dedicate this award to all those who risk their lives every day to help others, all peacekeepers, people on humanitarian missions, volunteers, doctors, people who demine countries, to make the land clean so that people can live safely and cultivate the land.

Why did I dedicate myself to the global anti-landmine campaign?

Because more than 60 million people across the globe, tomorrow will wake up in the fear of being killed or maimed by landmines.

The sign of our times is the stream of information that floods us from every angle and the ocean of words that are often meaningless and just sensational.

What is most important, happens in silence. Unfortunately, the human tragedies of innocent people, civilians, and children are also played out in silence. 80% of the landmine victims are civilians, children are representing 43% of the civilian casualties. Imagine, that one day you step on the landmine…

It’s just a moment. Then, overwhelming silence.

If you survive, you will be maimed and wounded. You may lose your hand or leg. Most often, there will be no assistance or help for you. It’s a miracle if you get a prosthesis because, in the places where I was as a peace ambassador, for example in Cambodia, not all children have prostheses. That is why I became an advocate of this purpose, that is why I support the global anti-landmine campaign.

If you wonder if it is far away from you, the answer is:

More than 1/4 of the world’s countries and territories are contaminated with landmines. Beyond our eastern border, in Ukraine, more than two million people now live in the daily fear that they or their relatives will step on a landmine. You can change it.

Each of you can make the world a better place. You can change the course of history today. Because one mine cleared means one life saved.

On my hand, you can see the bracelet which I received in Cambodia from Bill Morse from Landmine Relief Fund and Aki Ra, Top Ten Hero CNN, Cambodia Landmine Museum, Cambodian Self Help Demining.

If you support the Landmine Relief Fund, your help will be directed to the daily hard and dangerous work of the people in the minefield, who risks their life every day to clean Cambodia from landmines. Every child deserves a safe future. Your support will be dedicated also to a Rural School Village Programme.

This bracelet was made from a landmine, which had been cleared before it exploded under someone’s foot.
You can see the Khmer inscription on it: “One mine – One life”

I strongly encourage you to support the mine clearance organization and soon be able to say: “One Mine – One Life”.
Because of your involvement, the world became a better place.

Thank you”.
